ACTS 13:36
"For David after he had served his generation by the will of God, fell asleep and was buried with his fathers, and found corruption, but He whom God raised up saw no corruption."
Acts 13:36, is a scripture that I have just not been able to understand for years. I was studying the scripture some time ago. Checking out the Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words by R.E. Vine, I discovered that Vine interpreted the word “generation,” as “a whole multitude of people living at the same time.”
In other words “generation” is the group of people that you have walked with or encountered with in your life.
These are the generations that I have encountered in my life here on planet earth:
Happenings:
1.) The wild west.
2.) Birth of my grandparents.
3.) Birth of World-War One vets.
4.) Presidents: Chester Arthur, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harris, William McKinly.
Happenings:
1.) Birth of my father.
2.) Birth of World-War II vets.
3.) Presidents: William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, Calvin Coolidge.
Happenings:
1.) Birth of my mother.
2.) Great Depression.
3.) Beginning of World War II.
4.) Presidents: Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman.
Happenings:
1.) End of world War II.
2.) Post war building boom.
3.) Elvis “Pelvis” Pressly, Jerry Lee Lewis.
4.) Viet Nam War began.
5.) Presidents: Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson.
Happenings:
1.) Viet Nam War ends.
2.) Watergate Trials.
3.) Oil Embargo.
4.) Presidents: Richard M. Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Regan.
Happenings:
1.) Y2K.
2.) PC computers.
3.) Pagers to large cell phones.
4.) Dessert Storm.
5.) Presidents: Ronald Regan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton.
Happenings:
1.) 911.
2.) I Box, e-mails, websites, I phones.
3.) Presidents: George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Joe Biden.
I don’t know about the diagnostics of the future generations. What I do know is this, if a generation is approximately eighteen years long, it’s safe to say that I would witness the completion of the next and possibly half of the one that follows it.
Marketing experts take note of the generational trends, so that they gage the market correctly to advertise to them. Isn’t it a good idea for us Christians to chart and categorize generation groups so that we can more effectually present the Gospel?
Knowing the generations that will be on the earth during your life gives you a greater sense of eternity. In the words of Moses:
“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” – Psalms 90:12.
After our death, then our corruption (decomposing of our bodies in the grave), our legacy lives on.
“Your story is the greatest legacy that you will leave with your friends. It’s the longest lasting lasting legacy you will leave to your heirs.” Stephen Saint (son of Nate Saint martyred missionary to Ecuador)
What are you going to leave behind for your family and the rest of the world? Is it going to be your auto-bio notebook or a brass plate? Every person has a story and should write it, even if you didn’t get an A in English class.
